Call it what it is, call the USA the USA, and not America

January 17th 2025 I wrote this blog post in Dutch, and planning to post it in English later.

Today this Mastodon post reminded me of that.

I’ve considered it arrogant that for decades US-citizens refer to themselves as Americans, and call their country America, or in the silly bragging-mode which sometimes can be seen on forums Murica.

Arrogant and confusing it is because the whole continent from Argentina to Canada is called America. Step down from your high horses. Language usage is very important.

I am sure that lots of folks especially in South- and Center-America parts of the continent will be grateful for this correction in language usage.

US of A, USA, USians, US-citizens.

It is not that difficult.

Today a popular post on Mastodon shows :

Saddam Hussein, 2003. Muammar Gaddafi, 2011. Bashar Al-Assad, Putin, 2024.

Usually we think who the baddies and the heroes are in our enemy thinking.

Talking about baddies, let’s put the USA in the spotlight more often.

  • The USA is in the top 5 of countries using the death penalty (Hello ? Are we living in 1300 or 1400 A.C. ? Wake up, it’s 2024 A.C.).
  • The USA is a gun nut country, not only inside but also outside the country. They hugely benefit from wars and other conflicts.
  • Solving mass shootings at schools in the USA ? Not gonna be solved. The NRA lobby and the mass amount of millionaires and billionaires are in power.
  • The current thrive of extreme right ? The current hatred of anything that is “left” or progressive is the aftermath of McCarthyism.  (Come on, USA, stop the embargo of Cuba). And that makes working on alternative societies difficult.

I hope you will come to realize that Western media usually is very USA focused and not rightly so. For example Neo-liberalism by the hands of Reagan and Tatcher was a big mistake with massive suffering. Glorifying the USA (Like “It’s such a cool country”) is not the way forward for a better world.

The USA urgently needs help and healing as a country. It needs to turn away from being a hostile and fear mongering country and wanting to be the “police officer of the world” into a more peaceful country which values all life on Earth, and that includes plants, trees, seas, oceans, ice, as well as human beings, minority groups and so on. And once that process starts going the rest of the world will benefit because the USA has been and still is a very dominant player in this world affecting many lives outside of the USA.
